Nicky Larkin ~ Pripyat ~ video still ~ running time: 15 minutes |
Nicky Larkin's practice blurs the boundaries between video art, documentary and experimental film. His two most recent pieces are Pripyat and 72 hours in Camden. Pripyat is an experimental short funded by the Irish Arts Council, shot in the Chernobyl exclusion zone, and was selected for the European Media Art Festival 2008 in Osnabruck, Germany. It draws the viewer into the vast empty city of Pripyat, which was once home to 50,000 people but was evacuated in 1986 after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, and has remained empty since. Pripyat examines the relationship between time nature and culture in a city that will never be lived in again. 72 hours in Camden is a split-screen trip through the vibrant streets of one of London's most famous boroughs, following two aspiring rappers over the course of along weekend, challenging our predisposed notions of artistic expression and the different forms it can take. |
