How long will you forget me forever ~ oil on canvas ~ 150 x 150 cm |
Current ExhibitionAll of this could be trueThomas BrezingOn view from October 19th. Runs until November 20th, 2009. ooooIn this latest body of work presented by The Molesworth Gallery, Thomas Brezing deals with the transient and fragile elements of human constructs – both physical and psychological. Human vulnerability, mortality and our capacity for collective self-delusion are all undercurrents in the work. With Brezing, however, the message is always oblique, never direct. ooooWriting for Circa in 2005, Lucy Cotter said of Brezing that he ‘was becoming one of Ireland’s most interesting emerging painters......his dedication to painting over the past ten years promises that much will be achieved in the years to come’. Brezing’s compositions have a ‘nice offhand touch that recall Paddy Graham and occasionally, Anselm Kiefer in terms of pictorial architecture and strategy.’ (Aidan Dunne, Irish Times 2005). Graham himself has written admiringly of Brezing’s work: ‘Thomas has this thing called ‘vocation’. This is both an affliction and a gift. It promises light, revelation and truth, young forever in hope and glory and dust and it must be and so be it. I know these things of Thomas because now and then we share the worst coffee in Ireland. We also share our hope for art and its history, especially painting.’ |
